Accommodation

Kotare Room with a view

Kaimata Retreat has been built with timber harvested from the property and architecturally designed to reflect the love of organic harmony that Kyle and Rachel share. Blending in with the environment the lodge is nestled into the hillside overlooking the tidal estuary of Papanui Inlet.

The interior is divided into two buildings, one side comprising of two stylish suites and a guest laundry. The other building has one suite and a large open plan dining, lounge and kitchen area.

The beautiful honey colored macrocarpa beams and stone fireplace create a rustic feeling of home that is enhanced by the stunning views of the ever changing waters and wildlife that surrounds you.

Located on 5 acres of coastal hillside sloping down to the water’s edge, the property has been undergoing a planting programme for the last 5 years, reinstating native flora of this area.

A private path winds to a grassy knoll by the water’s edge and a peaceful sandy cove. Wander along the beach shore or enjoy a glass of wine whilst looking through the clear waters that swirl by. Take out the Kayak or try out the dingy for a gentle row around the bay.

Dinner Arrangements
Due to our location we have a full time chef during our Spring and Summer seasons, September through to March.   We do recommend pre-booking dinner for the night of arrival.  We have a 5pm cut-off for dinner orders for that evening.  If you book a room, you cannot self-cater dinner as our chef will be using the kitchen facilities.  Guests must either dine with us or at Portobello Village a 12 minute drive over gravel road.

During our Autumn and Winter seasons, April through to August, we are happy to organise a chef for the evening at the time of booking.

3-course Chef prepared dinner NZ$99.00 inc GST per person. This rate also includes pre-dinner canape and apertif.

See our sample dinner menu (PDF).

Exclusive Use of the Retreat
If guests choose to have exclusive use of the retreat, full breakfast is included in the rate. There is either a self-catering option for dinner, where you can bring your own food and you are left to yourselves, or alternatively, we can arrange to have a chef cook the meals for you. “For the ultimate getaway accommodation stay at Kaimata Retreat ... an amazing lodge hewn from local timbers that is perched high above the bay. Snuggle into a hearty fire at the central fireplace, play a game, read a book or search for seals on the rocks below; sunrise here is also spectacular for early rising couples.”
