Kaimata Retreat is located along the waters of Papanui Inlet, a scenic 30 minute drive onto the Otago Peninsula from Dunedin, New Zealand.

Take the high road with huge views of the Otago Harbour, South Pacific Ocean, Hooper’s Inlet and Papanui Inlet.

Alternatively, travel the harbour-side road past small bays and villages spread along the length of the Otago Harbour.

Getting to Kaimata Retreat, a short drive from Dunedin

Dunedin City is situated in the Otago region on the lower East Coast of the South Island, New Zealand.

Self drive:

  • 30 minutes from Dunedin onto the Otago Peninsula. Allow 1 hour from Dunedin Airport.
  • 20 minutes to the Royal Albatross Colony
  • 12 minutes to Portobello Village (closest amenities)
  • 4 hours to Christchurch
  • 3.5 hours Queenstown
  • 3.5 - 4 hours Te Anau (direct)
  • Allow 7 hours via Southern Scenic Route to Te Anau

We highly recommend you check-in before 5.00pm nightfall during our winter months of June, July and August.

Driving Instructions and Map

Directions to Kaimata Retreat from Portobello Village.  Your last 8km are on a gravel road travelling around two tidal inlets.  Enjoy the drive and watch for the sea birds who occupy the tidal meadows and saltmarsh.

  • turn right at Portobello Motors onto Allen’s Beach Road
  • follow road reaching Hooper’s Inlet intersection
  • turn left onto Allen’s Beach Road and continue driving until you reach Cape Saunders Road signpost (4km)
  • turn left and travel road over to Papanui Inlet
  • turn right and continue along Cape Saunders Road (2km)
  • Arrive at Kaimata Retreat (297 Cape Saunders Road)
